Jean

Jean worked as Head Orthoptist at the LRI for 21 years during which time, she worked closely with Vista’s Eye Clinic Liaison Officers and witnessed firsthand the huge impact their interactions on adults, children and their families, something also greatly appreciated by the Ophthalmologists.

Jean says “When planning retirement 5 years ago, I started volunteering with the Children and Young People’s Team at Vista as this seemed a natural progression and use of my skills.  I have supported various activities including regular basketball sessions, singing, gardening, visits to the outdoor pursuits centre, farm visits, strawberry picking, bouldering, bowling, drumming, assisting at the sensory room and crafts to name but a few.  It is so rewarding to see children and young people joining in with activities which under other circumstances they may find difficult.  I am very much a people person; these activities provide the opportunity to talk to children as well as relatives.

Once I started volunteering, I was asked to consider becoming a trustee, which seemed an excellent opportunity to influence the shape of Vista. I applied, was successful and as they say - the rest is history!

The trustee role is more challenging but that is the nature of the role. Having a working knowledge of HR, employment issues, understanding finances and planning services has been helpful. I have been given the opportunity to engage with most departments within Vista including the charity shops as well as attending various meetings including Forum meetings; it is always useful to listen to other people’s points of view and ideas.  I have learnt a lot about the history of Vista as well as charity governance which is important to influence the future.

The role is very varied, last year I even had the opportunity to do a sponsored Fire Walk!”
