Vista launches 'On Board with Sight Loss' project
Vista are working in collaboration with Go Travel Solutions (GTS) to make public transport more accessible for people with sight loss across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland (LLR) as part of the Tackling Loneliness with Transport fund.
On Thursday 30th March, we will launch our ‘On Board with Sight Loss' project, 11am to 1pm, in Humberstone Gate West, Leicester. Local transport operators and special guests will be in attendance to mark the launch of materials to educate bus, train, and taxi staff about the accessibility needs of people with sight loss.
The project is being delivered in three phases:
- We will provide information on local transport options to everyone on the LLR sight loss register in their preferred format – large print, XL print, XXL print, braille, audio, and email.
- We will educate local transport providers about the accessibility needs of people with sight loss and teach them how to identify and support a person with sight loss. This programme will be delivered via pre-recorded video.
- We will recommend improvements to local transport hubs to make them more accessible. Alternations will include things like implementing tactile paving, clearly marking curbs with bright colours, and making signage readable for those with visual impairments.
The aim of the event is to give transport providers and the wider community an opportunity to look at the various different documents and videos that have been produced for the project, try on our visual impairment glasses to see what life can be like for an individual with sight loss, talk to Vista members who have different levels of sight loss, speak to our team who will be offering eye screening and network.
